Conference by Elyette Benjamin Labarthe, professor, Bordeaux Montaigne university

Been born around 1965s, in the Mexican-American districts of the big metropolises and around the border zone of San Diego, in the trail of the movement of political and cultural excitement called El Movimiento, the chicano mural could be envisaged as the spontaneous expression of a reaction to the ostracism of the host country. But murals, rarely the fruit of the work of self-taughts, must be rather envisaged as skilfully orchestrated collective works which require a perfect professional skill, a know-how which is situated to the antipodes of the amateurism.
